Bugs
There are really only 2 types of bug that you should be aware of that can upset your stay in New England:
The Black Fly and the Deer Tick.
Blackflies: Are small, black critters mostly to be found in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine in the Spring near water. They are most usual following snow melt and through to the second or third week in June.
They do bite and they make sitting out in the evening only possible in a screened porch. They are not generally poisonous but you can get localised swelling. If you have several bites check with a Pharmacy or Doctor

Deer Ticks: These parasites are usually found in woodland so it is best to cover up. Some will carry Lyme’s Disease. The bite swells to a circular shape about 2 inches across, you may get headaches and sore joints.
You should see a doctor if you suspect that you have been bitten

Poison Ivy, Poison Sumak and Poison Oak: Plants that upon contact with skin release a highly allergic oil that causes a most unpleasant and very itchy rash

If you have to go to the Doctor: You will have to pay the bill in full and for any medication. Make sure that you get all of the receipts. In an emergency situation you will have to call your Travel Insurance Emergency Line, record all details of this phone call, time, location, who you spoke to, the call log number or case number and ask the doctor to sign it, if they will.
